20141202 - PD - Project Cost Control - an underrated knowledge area for Project Managers

02 December 2014 | Professional Development Event | Project Cost Control - an underrated knowledge area for Project Managers

Project Cost Control is often misunderstood as a variety of the finance or accounting discipline that is remote from actual project execution. It should be seen as a fundamental part of Project Controls and a key support function to the Project Manager to enable successful project execution.

Poorly implemented Cost Control has led to memorable mega-project disasters with projects spiraling out of control.

Jeremie Averous has developed handbooks and advanced courses for leading global project-driven companies in this particular field and will share its key contents for the first time publicly with the Singapore project-management community.

The talk will summarize a few concepts of advanced cost control relevant to the Project Managers, Portfolio/ PMO managers and C-level Executives of project-driven organizations:

  • Why Cost Control is different from Accounting, and the organizational consequences,
  • How Cost Control interfaces with the other disciplines of Project Controls (schedule, risk, contract),
  • Cost Control as a career: the ideal profile and training of a cost controller,
  • Project Value Delivery’s Cost Control Golden Rules,
  • How to forecast cost – the two basic methods depending on the cost type,
  • How to manage Changes in terms of forecast, and the concept of sensitivities,
  • Contingency management during project execution,
  • Time-phasing, the concept and the effect of Percentage of Completion accounting on the project profit for projects that span over several years,
  • Cost Control forensics – the consequences of inadequate cost control, and how to check that proper practices are implemented.
