Make it much easier to learn and practice PM

Do you find it difficult to truly get into project management? Are you part of a majority who adopts the outdated approach by first taking a 700 slide-based classroom course to learn project management and pass an exam?

The best way to learn is to practice. It is a fact that people learn by doing and that is how to best acquire basics of project management. That can give you the confidence to run your own projects and demonstrate how “easy” project management is. Later, practitioners can take a classroom course on PMI CAPM, PMI PMP, Agile, PRINCE2, etc. to connect their practical knowledge.

People need four things to facilitate project management learning:

1. Light PM process that is easy to follow;
2. Sample projects (PDF, online) based on a light PM process;
3. Easy to use online PM application (free, visual);
4. Free training material for anybody to facilitate such training.

New to project management? These are the learning outcomes:

1. Understand a lightweight, documented PM process;
2. Create a Project Charter document;
3. Perform a WBS using Post-It notes;
4. Gather requirements including quality information;
5. Use a simple online PM Tool;
6. Attempt planning;
7. Simplify project communication.

Already an experienced project manager? Join to be able to teach others how to:

1. Explain a lightweight PM process and how to customise it;
2. Introduce a company / project scenario;
3. Perform a WBS exercise using Post-It notes;
4. Gather requirements including quality information;
5. Use a simple online PM Tool;
6. Do basic planning;
7. Simplify project communication.

Presentation and Discussion Method:
Instead of just lecturing, the speaker prefers an interactive format where participants also share their ideas and ask questions. Audience participation reinforces the learning, enables company executives to share ideas with colleagues and, in general, deepens understanding of the subject.

Frank Turley

Frank Turley is a project management author, speaker, and adviser, with more than 16 years of experience in project management.

Frank is on a mission to help aspiring project managers gain practical experience. He does this through his writings, sample projects, tips, and innovative ways of teaching the PM methodologies.

We learn to be better project managers not by attending one short classroom training, but by gradually learning and practicing new skills and constantly keeping on the edge of our comfort zone. Frank would like each organisation to provide their project managers with a skills development plan, and this is why communities like PMI and IPMA are so important.

Frank is also an active member of Toastmasters which is a global not-for-profit organization that helps people develop and practice their leadership and communication techniques. In fact, he promotes Toastmasters as the perfect place to develop and practice your project management skills.
