In Person: One Day Bootcamp - Outcomes Thinking With Alexandra Chapman

~ Registration closes on Thu, 24 Nov at 1pm ~

Outcomes are clear, specific, measurable descriptions of what the future looks like, when it is working just right.  Outcomes are (or should be) your primary measure of project success.

In this Bootcamp, we will learn how to fix poor project and strategy execution results by applying three simple concepts:

  • OUTCOMES THINKING – defining what the future looks like when it is working just right.

  • OUTCOMES PATH DEPENDENCY – highlighting critical decisions which open up or close down alternative futures. (It's far more important for most projects than Critical Path for success because it shows the best sequence to execute to build momentum and maximise early gains.)

  • REVERSE ENGINEERED PLANNING – identifying ALL of the activities needed to deliver outcomes systematically by planning BACKWARDS from the future. So that everything gets done - not just the "deliverables stuff".

These three concepts do not replace the traditional project delivery approaches such as PMBOK, PRINCE2, Agile. Instead, they wrap around them to focus. Everyone can learn how.

Key Features

Most projects miss the vital step of clearly defining their ‘desired business outcomes’ – These describe what the future business-as-usual operational environment will look like when it is working just right. Instead, projects focus on what the project must do, rather than what the business intends to achieve. This omission undermines the ability of projects to deliver business value.

When you get this one step right - of defining the 'desired business outcomes' for every project - it will single-handedly transform your ability to execute successfully and increase the value you realise from your projects.

Your desired business outcomes are the focal point around which everything else revolves. Clearly defining them ensures you are focused on success and that you will know it when you achieve it.

Using the desired business outcomes approach, we have seen increase of over 400% in the value of the benefits vis-à-vis the initial project value estimates.

It enables everyone in an organisation – from senior business executives down to front-line operational staff, and project & technical specialists – to easily define valuable projects to execute strategy and then deliver the business results successfully.

It is a thinking process—made up of Principles, Mental models/frameworks, Processes, and Techniques.

It was developed over more than three decades—'two lifetimes of work'—with organisation on real problems to create practical solutions.

Learning Outcomes

After attending this bootcamp, you will be able to:

  • Understand what is Outcomes Thinking and why is it a critical mindset change

  • Understand the principles and importance of converting tacit knowledge to explicit knowledge

  • Apply accelerated outcome thinking techniques: Brain on a Page, Jigsaw Puzzle Sort, 'When We'

  • Create an outcome framework for your projects. Develop your Outcome Statements and link to the Path Dependency Roadmap

  • Walk away with the knowledge on how to execute the change

By the end of the day, you will have thought through and created your outcome statements and linked these into a Path Dependency roadmap that shows you where to start with the implementation.

You will understand how to apply the techniques and use them yourself, and with colleagues, friends, and family.

You will also receive a certificate after completing the “TOP OUTCOMES THINKING” training.

Agenda & Pre-work

9.00 am        Welcome

9.45 am        Introductions over morning tea

10.00 am      Outcomes Thinking - theory and practice

12.15 pm      Lunch

1.15 pm        Working on exercises

2.15 pm        Outcomes Planning - theory and practice (with tea break)

4.45 pm        Q&A and wrap-up

The session is very hands-on with three separate exercises: defining outcomes, the path dependency roadmap, and reverse engineering change activities. You will be working with one or more partners to complete the exercises.

What can I work on?

You need to “bring a project” to work on. A work-related IT project or business initiative involving many people, an entrepreneurial venture, a product launch, or even a personal project. All of these are fine, and in fact, the messier or more unclear, the better.

While the teaching context will be framed as executing transformative projects in organisations, the same mindset, processes, and techniques can scale up or down and be used in an enterprise context or a personal or entrepreneurial context.
