How Project Managers deal with sustainability, circular economy and climate change challenges in the execution of Major Projects

With Climate Change driving the increased focus on sustainability and the Circular Economy, managing projects will need to evolve and focus more on sustainability concepts. Project Managers will need to look at partnerships, stakeholders and embrace the tools and trade-offs required to manage sustainable infrastructure. This Webinar will give Project Managers an insight into these concepts and invoke dialogue and discussion that will drive the growth of sustainability concepts in the execution major projects.

After attending this webinar, you will be able to:

  • Get an overview and insight of the demand for sustainable infrastructure in the Asia Pacific region;

  • Understand how emerging sustainability issues can impact project success;

  • Use strategic foresight tools to explore how potential future changes can impact project development;

  • Integrate sustainability issues into project management and project delivery;

  • Define the perimeters and understand how a green project functions;

  • Understand the myth commonly related to green projects;

  • Understand approaches to embedding sustainability, circular economy and climate change into projects;

  • Take away examples of approaches to embed sustainability concepts into projects in Singapore.

Presentation 1: Opportunities and Challenges in Sustainable Infrastructure (Mr Kow Juan Tiang)

Demand for infrastructure is large and growing rapidly in the Asia Pacific region. This is driven by urbanisation, social and demographic changes. Climate change and technological advancement have also changed the ways we are looking at and developing infrastructure. This has precipitated new approach and modality in the way governments are looking at the implementation of essential infrastructure. To fulfil these requirements, more can be done to address the issues and challenges in the implementation of such projects. These would include building capacity, creating more awareness of the new solutions available and fostering more partnerships between the different stakeholders involved in developing sustainable infrastructure.

Presentation 2: Designing for the Future – Creating Sustainable, Resilient and Adaptable Projects (Mr Wayne McPhee)

Traditional design and development of major projects assumes that the world will look essentially the same at the time the start of the project as it will be throughout the life of the product. But we can clearly see a future with accelerating climate change, environmental damage, regulatory changes, demographic shifts, new technology, and rising social expectations for diversity, ethics and responsible business. Project teams need to revisit their basic design assumptions and methodologies to respond to these challenges. This session will explore the tools and strategies that project teams can use to understand possible future scenarios and create projects that are sustainable, resilient and adaptable.

Presentation 3: Debunking Myths of Managing Green Projects (Ms Farizan d’Avezac de Moran)

As sustainability intensifies, so as the level of project management. The coverage and depth of managing a project that has sustainability attributes greatly relies on the understanding of the trade-offs and managing the process successfully.

With a larger team with diverse focus, it is often a challenge to priorities the priorities. Working through the term ‘Green Value Engineering (GVE)’ provides examples on how and where the interceptions, loopholes are and places great emphasis in de-bunking the myth that greatly associates itself with sustainability.

Presentation 4: Embedding sustainability into infrastructure delivery – a UK perspective (Mr Philip Charles)

This speaker will deliver a UK perspective in embedding sustainability, circular economy and climate change into infrastructure projects, He will also illustrate this this approach at the corporate and project level, with relevant examples
