Virtual Workshop: The Kanban Game
Virtual Workshop: The Kanban Game
This workshop will utilise a game that demonstrates the use of Kanban in software development.
We will play the game for about 60 minutes and then there will be an open discussion about the principles the game attempts to teach us and we will celebrate those with the highest game scores.
Expect to have fun. The game is fast paced and it is not easy to get a high score. Ask questions, challenge the game design and come to terms with the things you can control and the things you cannot.
Objectives:
-
Understand the basic principles for Kanban as a lean, agile software development approach;
-
Grasp the importance of limiting work in progress;
-
Understand how to look for bottlenecks in a workflow;
-
Understand the difference between a pull and push workflow.
Learning Outcomes:
- Know when to use Kanban for a project or specific subset of tasks within a project;
- Know when should we use Kanban instead of other agile software development approaches.
After attending, you will be able to:
-
Set up a Kanban board;
-
Tune work in progress (WIP) limits to optimise a workflow;
-
Utilise a Continuous Flow Diagram (CFD) to visualise bottlenecks and inconsistencies in a workflow.
Presentation and Discussion Method:
- This event will use Zoom, so please ensure that you have INSTALLED Zoom on your computer and log in via the app, not through web browser. You can download the Zoom application here.
- We will be playing the game, which is a browser-based application. You do not need to install any software, but you will want to have a laptop or desktop with a larger screen for a better experience. The game has sound effects so you may want to have headphones.
- Participating from a personal computer (desktop or laptop) is recommended.
- Make sure to have a stable internet connection.
