Presentation 1: Incorporating Sustainable Practices – Creating Resilient Projects across the lifecycle (Moderator: Ms Sybil Tan, Singapore)

Traditional design and development of major projects assumes that the world will look essentially the same at the time the start of the project as it will be throughout the lifecycle of the asset. It is very clear, however, that it will not be the case, with accelerating climate change, environmental damage, regulatory changes, demographic shift, new technology, and rising social expectations for diversity, ethics and responsible business.  All the teams that are part of the Projects’ lifecycle need to revisit and rethink their design assumptions and methodologies to respond to these challenges.

In this session, we will look into the sustainable practices that can be adopted at various stages of the lifecycle of projects to create resilience to the Assets moving forward.

Presentation 2Taking responsibility? What stimulates Project Managers to consider sustainability in their projects? (Speaker: Prof Dr Gilbert Silvius, Austria)

As projects play a key-role in creating a more sustainable society, the integration of the concepts of sustainability into project management are one of the most important global project management trends today. This integration refers both to the sustainability of the project’s deliverable and to the sustainable management of projects. The project manager has a central and influential position in the consideration of sustainability in the project. However, many factors or circumstances influence the behaviour of the project manager. The presentation Taking responsibility? What stimulates Project Managers to consider sustainability in their projects? He will reflect on a number of studies that explored the factors that stimulate project managers and project owners to consider sustainability.

Presentation 3Sustainable Construction Practices & Technologies, Case-Study: Havelock MRT Station (Speaker: Raymond Ngiam Heng Wan, Singapore)

Achieving the goal of being not only smart and digital but also sustainable is, particularly for a contractor, a long game – especially when many of our construction methods and energy sources remain quite traditional. However, the key is to ensure we keep pushing forward together with the project stakeholders in driving innovation to address environmental concerns.

We will look at the global warming issue through the lens of the construction industry, and explores how a combination of construction practices, smart design, innovative engineering and new technology and tools can and will help deliver sustainable construction project.

Presentation 4Energy transition in Germany - insights into the implementation of large-scale projects (Speaker:  Prof. Dr Reinhard Wagner, Germany)

Political decisions and current challenges are driving the energy transition in Germany. The main aim is to phase out nuclear technology and environmentally harmful coal, oil and gas combustion, and to significantly expand the share of renewables from its current level of around 50%. Many major projects are being carried out to achieve this. One of them, the 7 billion EUR mega project "SüdLink", which will soon bring electricity from offshore wind farms in the North Sea to the industry in the south of the country, will be reported here. Because it's not just a matter of doing the right projects, but of doing these projects right! In addition to some technological insights of the project in terms of sustainability, it will also be explained on how to deal with stakeholders, how to involve suppliers and how to apply modern project management methods and tools.

Presentation 5: Sustainability in and of itself will not solve the earth’s problems. The Project Profession can and must do more (Speaker:  Dr Joel B. Carboni, USA)

In this talk, Dr. Carboni will share the necessary mindset shift that the project profession must make to address sustainability issues and the specific areas project managers must focus on. He will also share a case study that outlines the benefits of what happens when you take sustainability into account using a project in the Southeast Asian Region that won a GPM award in 2021.
