Major capital projects are often complicated, fast-paced and risky endeavours. They are carried out in an environment prone to political and economic changes, uncertain benefits that impact the scope and have interference from key stakeholders, all of which often places extreme pressure on the project team. Stakeholders are demanding transparency, predictability and accountability for project results so that administrators and boards are empowered to make prudent capital decisions.
Over the past decades, owners and contractors have made considerable strides in improving the delivery of capital projects. We have seen a host of advances in the form of new construction techniques, project delivery strategies, and enhanced processes and controls for safety, risk management, budget, scope and schedule. But the overall industry performance during this period continues to tell a discouragingly different story, replete with a continued inability to increase productivity, raise performance levels and reduce project failures – a record that pales against the achievements in other sectors.
How do we as an industry learn from the good practices of the past whilst avoiding the pitfalls that have befallen other projects? Join us for this sharing session where we analyse the research and practical perspectives to understand why projects fail, and what are some of the strategies we can adopt to increase success. You will leave with practical tips that can be applied to your job, even if you work on smaller projects.

Presentation and Discussion Method:
The workshop will be delivered in the form of a brief presentation followed by a panel discussion to encourage audience participation. The biggest value will be derived from the panel discussion where the audience will be encouraged to ask questions and share diverse experiences, opinions and practical considerations. The audience will leave with an understanding of some of the key considerations and strategies to manage major capital infrastructure projects.
About the Speakers:
Jonathan Jong (LinkedIn)
Director, Major Projects Adivsory, KPMG Singapore
Jonathan is a Director leading the Major Projects Advisory team at KPMG Singapore. He is a chartered civil engineer and certified project manager with over 15 years’ experience in delivery of major infrastructure projects and risk management solutions for both private and public sector.
Jonathan started his career as a civil engineer and project manager in the UK. He worked on some of Europe’s largest construction projects including BAA Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5 Project and Crossrail (London’s newest underground line). Since moving back to Singapore, he has provided infrastructure consultancy services to some of Singapore’s largest infrastructure clients in the public and private sector.
Prakash S Ramakrishnan (LinkedIn)
Deputy Director, Land Transport Authority, Singapore
Prakash is a Registered Professional Engineer with the Professional Engineer’s Board, Singapore and has over 25 years of experience in all aspects of project development from conceptualisation and planning, design, contract administration, construction and project management for several building and infrastructure projects both in Singapore and within the region. His career has spanned both the public and private sectors where he was involved in multiple roles including the review of public sector infrastructure projects, consultancy and execution of major infrastructure projects. More recently, he has been involved in the setup and operation of the Project Management and Governance office for major public infrastructure projects.
